Dear readers,
The Association's current strategy urges us to promote cooperation, including the exchange of knowledge and joint projects, with regional road authorities associations, as well as with international organisations who have similar objectives. We were able to already take several actions in this direction and our action plan is getting a fresh boost with the arrival of Kajsa Ström, who came from Sweden as Technical Advisor for Partnerships. The following points are of particular interest:
- We have two study groups with French-speaking countries in sub-Saharan Africa (whose reports will be published shortly) on Geometric and structural design standards for Trans-African highways and on Practical Pavement Design Recommendations for French-speaking African countries. Their reports will be publish soon ;
- The four Latin American working groups are promoting and relaying our ideas on the design and operation of safer road infrastructure, asset management, pavements and disaster management;

Safer road and transport infrastructure will be essential to save lives and achieve the United Nations sustainable development goals of road safety, infrastructure investment and access to safe and sustainable transport. Organized jointly by PIARC Technical Committees C.1 (National Road Safety Policies and Programs) and C.2 (Design and Operations of Safer Road Infrastructure), the seminar will focus on global and local policies, strategy, investment, innovation and research success.

PIARC Technical Committee D.5 "Road Tunnel Operations" and PIARC French Committee are organizing the First International Conference on Road Tunnel Operations and Safety. It will include two days of technical sessions and round tables, followed by a day of technical visits in the tunnels of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

In terms of sustainable development, the current situation in the field of infrastructure varies greatly from one country to another. Certain countries have laid down regulations; a few have set objectives to be achieved, while others have no regulations at all. So far, the World Road Association has not issued any recommendations for road tunnels which reflect the current'State of the Art' in various countries. Actions undertaken to mitigate the negative effects of climate change on road networks have varied from one country to another. During the period 2012 - 2015, Technical Committee 2.2 collected and evaluated case studies on urban mobility from numerous large and medium-sized cities from all over the world. The case studies, evaluated in terms of three specific objectives, identified strong trends that this report proposes to revisit (policies promoting development oriented towards public transit, modal rebalancing oriented towards public transit, carpooling (high occupancy vehicle (HOV) etc.).
