For the
past two years, the words pandemic, SARS-CoV-2, variants, face masks,
isolation, social distance, have become part of our daily lives. And just when we were beginning to glimpse
the end of the tunnel, just when we thought we were getting closer to the
possibility of returning to the much-cherished normality... another war breaks
out, once again putting the whole of humanity on edge. My wish, like everyone
else's, is that it will soon be over. It is
undeniable that the pandemic has changed people's habits. Virtuality is here to
stay, imposing a new reality that calls on us to connect with each other at

In March, Colombia and PIARC Committee 4.4 on Tunnels organised a much awaited event: the World Road Tunnels Seminar, which took place in Medellin (Colombia) on March 29- April 1st, 2022. It was attended by the PIARC president, Nazir Alli, and the Secretary General, Patrick Mallejacq, who could meet colleagues from co-organisers National Road Institute (INVIAS), Colombia Society of Engineers (SCI) and the Association of Tunnels (ACTOS). With this hybrid event,more than 1,000 attendees (in person and online) were able to learn all about the latest developments in tunnelling in Colombia and in the world. This seminar is a landmark event because it signals the development of Colombia’s involvement in PIARC. Since this is the 2nd most populated Spanish-speaking country in the world, and the 4th largest country in Latin America, there is much to look forward to! The PIARC General Secretariat welcomes Jeayoun KIM and Kei SENOO
Ms Jeayoun Kim and Mr Kei Senoo have been appointed as PIARC Technical Advisors under Strategic Theme (ST) 2 "Mobility" and ST 3 "Safety and Sustainability", respectively. Jeayoun is seconded for two years by Korea Expressway Corporation, a public company that builds and operates Korean roads in South Korea. She was also a member of the Korean Organising Committee for the 2015 World Road Congress in Seoul. Kei is seconded for two years by West Nippon Expressway Company (NEXCO-West), which operates toll roads in western Japan. His key mission at PIARC is to support and liaise with technical committees on Strategic Theme 3, "Safety and Sustainability," and allow better communication in pursuing their object.

This Working Group aims to carry out a review and an international benchmarking of current technologies in order to identify and test the solutions that could best suit the Italian scenario. It will also provide guidelines for the transition to the Smart Signs and Recommendations for the regulatory adaptation for its implementation.
