The Association's statutory meetings that we held in
Dakar, Senegal, last November, were a landmark event. They were the first
face-to-face meeting of our National Committees and Council since 2019, and all
participants were delighted to have the opportunity for direct exchange at last.
A debate allowed a dozen countries to present how they approach resilience.
Real progress was made on issues such as the approval of the list of Committees
for the next work cycle (2024-2027), or the best way to deal with inflation. >> Read the full editorial

November, Tunis (Tunisia) In
collaboration with the Tunisian Road Association, the Ministry for equipment
and housing, the Ministry of transport and the Tunisian Federation of
municipalities, PIARC organised an International Seminar on sustainable
mobility for resilient cities and peri-urban regions. Many
challenges of sustainable mobility in urban and peri-urban areas were
discussed by around 30 speakers, including several experts from Technical Committee
2.1 “Mobility in urban areas” but also from the World Bank, the Islamic
development bank, the European investment bank as well as Tunisian private and public
agencies. The topic
was approached from various angles: infrastructure, financial aspects,
existing networks and structures, new modes of mobility and their
place in the urban and peri-urban setting. >>

2-3 November, Birmingham (UK) Highways UK, attended by
over 6,000 delegates, was a great opportunity to share work that PIARC UK has
been undertaking on the carbon challenge for the roads sector. The session, titled “Inspiring decarbonisation through
global collaboration”, included the following speakers - Lila Tachtsi, Simon
Wilson and Matthew Eglinton. Moreover, a key presentation at the session was given
by James Henry who chairs the project oversight team for PIARC carbon
special project. As the Chair of PIARC UK, David Ogden, said, providing
a global perspective demonstrates the importance to “learn lessons from other
countries and to share best practice”. >>

16-18 November, Acapulco (Mexico) The main objective of this international seminar was
to present and disseminate, among other topics, the resilience of bridges
in order to seek solutions and to be able to face unexpected situations. With a technical programme of 11 sessions and round
tables as well as an "Expo-Bridges" including 17 stands and 38
sponsors, the participants were able to discover the latest technologies,
products and design systems that are applied in the modernisation. It should also be noted that 525 people participated thanks
to the collaboration and dedication of the members of the AMIVTAC Organising
Committee in the State of Guerrero, as well as of all the other members who
made the seminar a success. >>

November, Jasna (Slovakia) The 27th edition
of Ivan Poliaček Seminar, organised by the Slovak Technical University
of Bratislava together with the Slovak Road Association, gathered 130
participants in person and online. The main
theme was "Road Construction in Changing Conditions" and the
special topics have been chosen based on the many problems, changes, and
challenges that the current era brings to us. The organisers of the seminar
being supporters of PIARC, one aim was to inform and invite participants to the
27th World Road Congress, in October 2023, in Prague. A total of
23 presentations were given by representatives of various organisations such as
the Ministry, the administrators of the road and motorway network, their
designers, contractors or experts from Czech and Slovak universities.
