Here it comes a new PIARC Congress to generate again a global exchange of knowledge on policies and practices in road infrastructure and road transport. This time the focus will be on winter maintenance, resilience and decarbonisation. The invitation to submit abstracts for the 17th World Winter Service and Road Resilience Congress, 10-13 March 2026, Chambery, France, is now open. The seminars will address topics such as transport asset management in Arusha, Tanzania (April 9-11), climate resilience for unpaved roads in Abidjan, Ivory Coast (April 14-16), and climate-resilient pavements in Tunis, Tunisia (April 28-30). Other events include a focus on road network resilience in Maputo, Mozambique (May 7-9), decarbonization strategies in Vienna, Austria (May 7-9), rural road safety in Dakar, Senegal (May 14-16), and innovations in tunnel operations in Chongqing, China (May 21-23). Key outcomes included significant progress in PIARC’s financial model, communication strategy, and upcoming governance cycle. Engaging technical debates on road resilience to flooding featured expert insights from Australia, Austria, Japan, and South Africa, and visits to South Africa’s Disaster Management Centre and Huguenot Tunnel added practical perspective. The next Council meeting will be held in Andorra from November 4-6, where members will elect the new President, Vice Presidents, and Executive Committee members.

PIARC’s webinar on aging infrastructure drew international participation, while the association contributed to global discussions at the IRF World Congress in Istanbul and Highways UK in Birmingham. PIARC representatives also engaged at TAC 2024 in Vancouver, promoting the 2027 World Road Congress. These activities underscore PIARC’s commitment to advancing sustainable, resilient, and inclusive road infrastructure worldwide.

In Birmingham, TC 3.3 and TC 1.5 engaged over 50 participants at the Highways UK event, discussing asset management and disaster resilience. Meanwhile, TC 2.2 held a successful workshop in Timisoara, focusing on rural road safety and sustainable networks. The Rome meetings of TC 4.5 and TC 4.6 emphasized decarbonization and smart technologies, while TC 1.3 gathered in Zhengzhou to explore innovative financing solutions. TC 2.3 met in Istanbul to address sustainable freight issues, and TC 1.2 convened in Venice to discuss roads' socio-economic impacts. TC 4.1 also met in Cologne for insights into pavement technology, among others. These are just a few examples of the diverse activities undertaken by PIARC’s Technical Committees during these two months. The commitment to advancing sustainable and resilient infrastructure remains strong as we pave the way for a greener future!

Celebrating progress: exciting events from PIARC’s National Committees in October 2024

- The Slovak Road Association co-organized DIM 2024 – Urban Transport Infrastructure (2-3 October, Žilina, Slovakia), addressing essential urban topics, such as air quality monitoring with sensor networks, new urban planning legislation, and sustainable transport. The conference featured panels and 17 expert presentations on urban mobility and parking, drawing wide interest.

This symposium offers an in-depth exploration of innovative practices, future technologies, and collaborative strategies aimed at advancing traffic management worldwide.
