Patrick Malléjacq
Secretary General of PIARC

PIARC has just celebrated a very important anniversary with the 400th issue of its journal Routes/Roads!

First of all, why this journal? One of PIARC's main missions is to share knowledge on road-related topics internationally. To achieve this, we have developed a very rich toolkit over our 115 years of existence.

The exchanges that take place within our Technical Committees are the most effective means to fulfill this mission. These Committees are made up of experts appointed by the member countries of the Association, who compare their problems, share the solutions they have developed, and compare the best practices according to different contexts. Their discussions and work are truly the driving force of PIARC. However, the road community is necessarily larger than the 1,800 international experts, and the question arose of how to disseminate this knowledge beyond our Committees. This is why PIARC publishes technical reports (accessible to everyone for free), offers online manuals, organizes conferences and international thematic seminars, and holds World Congresses every two years.

The quarterly journal Routes/Roads is another of our dissemination tools, and not the least. It can even be said that it is one of our business cards. Our journal was born in 1911 and is published in three languages: French, English, and Spanish. It is distributed in three ways: as PDF files, through a dedicated website, and in print format. The latter format is, of course, destined to disappear.

Together with Robin Sébille, who is the editor-in-chief of the magazine, I wish you a good read.
