International Seminar "Road Safety for Connectivity and Productivity"
03-05 May 2017, Santiago (Chile)
During May 3, 4 and 5, the Second International Road Safety Congress of Chile 2017 "Road Safety for Connectivity and Productivity" was held in Santiago, organized by the Technical Committee on Road Safety of the Chilean Roads and Transport Association (ACCT) (www.acct.cl) in partnership with the Technical Committee C.2 "Design and Operation of Safe Road Infrastructure" of PIARC (World Road Association).

Summary of the Seminar
The aim of the conference was to consolidate a certain space for the dissemination of national and international experiences on road safety, linked to road management and its dual role of providing connectivity and support to productive activities and face the permanent challenge of public, private and academic sectors, to promote safer roads, based on the conclusions of the previous Congress held in 2015.
The congress convened around 120 attendees per day, 15 companies and 5 sponsoring institutions. Participants included professionals from the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications, Ministry of Public Works, Carabineros de Chile (National Police), Consultants, Service and Equipment Suppliers for the mining industry, professionals from various CODELCO divisions linked to road safety as well as from different mining companies, academics from various universities and students.
During the congress, several topics related to road safety were discussed, including international experiences on the subject, with presentations from Chile, England, Spain, Germany, Mexico, South Africa, Malaysia, Sweden, Italy and Finland, among others.
Parallel to this congress was a Workshop on Road Safety Audits, showing the reality of the use of this formal process within Latin America.
Finally, based on the discussion generated during the congress, the need for an up-to-date national road safety policy and a review of governance was concluded. This requires the incorporation of road safety audits into the life cycle of Road projects, vulnerable users need to be given due attention in design standards and practices, integrate good road safety practices into productive sectors, with good practices from private and state road agencies, where technology and technological development plays an important role in the implementation of road safety measures.
