International Seminar "Road Sustainability and Green Technology"

22-24 April 2014, Bali (Indonesia)

This international seminar was organized in cooperation between the Technical Committee 1.3 "Climate Change and Sustainability" of the World Road Association, the Road Engineering Association of Asia (REAAA) and the Indonesian Road Development Association (IRDA) and was hosted by IRDA.

Preparatory Document for the International Seminar

The first day of the seminar focused on the general concept and policy towards sustainability in the region. From the presentations given it was very clear that sustainability is gaining a high recognition as an issue for road policy and planning in the region..

The discussion on finance and its role in supporting more sustainable roads was initiated by contributions from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. Clearly, as funders, the Banks are actively concerned to see that projects have been adequately considered from a sustainability standpoint.

TC1.3 members outlined the work of the committee in looking at the issues of climate change, carbon accounting and sustainability appraisal. These presentations and the subsequent discussion demonstrated the need, in each of these areas, for clear direction and exposition of best practice relevant to needs of different countries.

Day 2 of the seminar saw the presentation of 32 papers in two parallel sessions. A large amount of information was presented in areas as diverse as sustainability policy, green technologies, sustainability appraisal and rating systems, as well as the development and certification of sustainability competences within road agency's staff and their supply chains.

The breadth of topics covered illustrated well how far the sustainability debate has moved from the rhetoric to the development of practical approaches for implementation.
