Secretary General of PIARC
In addition to our World Congresses (World Road Congresses and World Winter Service and Road Resilience Congresses) which are held every four years, PIARC brings together international experts on a regular basis in seminars and workshops to help the Association's members achieve their goals and identify best practices.
Most of the events that we have planned over the next months will take place online, but they are organised in coordination with partner countries. We are very thankful to them. For example, PIARC organises a seminar on climate change adaptation and resilience of road networks (in low- and middle-income countries) in November, together with the Uganda National Roads authority. This is a very topical issue, as we all know. More generally, there are many exciting and interesting events taking place over the next few months, so stay in touch to make sure you do not miss out. Our seminars, be they virtual or face-to-face events, are excellent opportunity to share knowledge with international leading experts, and also to engage directly with local experts and practitioners, who can thus influence the work that is conducted in our Committees.
Our Winter Service and Road Resilience Congress – Calgary 2022 will also take place online, and our usual statutory meetings meet the same fate: Commissions, Executive Committee, – even the 2021 Council, initially scheduled in Dakar, Senegal. New technologies allowed us to go on at full pace, but are no substitute for our face-to-face, friendly meetings. This is why we are very excited by our upcoming “Mid Term Meeting”, which will be hosted in Prague by the Czech Republic. This internal event is a long-standing tradition of the Association and is a key part of our overall processes. The Mid Term Meeting is a time in the work cycle to pause, to ideate, and to review cross-cutting topics with all our Committee and Task Forces, so that we can better serve the needs and expectations of our members. This year, we will among others discuss how we can promote gender inclusion and diversity, the impact of COVID-19 on roads and transport, and how we tackle innovation, climate change, road safety and resilience across the board. We hope that this will mark the end of a too-long period of virtual interactions and very much look forward to meeting the leaders of all our Committee and Task Forces, at long last!
