Editorial - Roadletter April 2024
Miguel Caso Flórez
PIARC Technical Director
In April 2024, PIARC's Strategic Plan for 2024-2027 has integrated the final adjustments, following a meticulous process of nearly two years. The overall approval of the Strategic Plan was carried out by the Council on September 30, 2023, although it delegated to the Executive Committee the authority to approve the necessary adjustments after the kick-off meetings of the Technical Committees for the 2024-2027 cycle. The Strategic Planning Commission first, and then the Executive Committee, have analysed the adjustments proposed by the Technical Committees and approved the final version, integrating in particular innovative approaches for the decarbonization of road infrastructure and road transport, as well as duly integrating the gender approach in the road sector and in PIARC activities.
The beginning of the 2024-2027 cycle is marked by the enthusiasm of the Technical Committees to launch their work, and in particular to organize PIARC events in order to fulfil the mission of knowledge exchange. The 127 member countries are also getting involved in the organization of PIARC events, and we already have congresses, seminars, conferences and workshops scheduled in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Côte d'Ivoire, Czech Republic, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Senegal, Slovakia, South Korea, South Africa, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Uganda... and many other host countries that will emerge during the 2024-2027 cycle. This will undoubtedly lead to more PIARC events than ever before, thus contributing to improve policies and practices on road infrastructure and road transport worldwide, to offer better services and conditions to citizens within a framework of integration of transport modes, respect for the environment and improvement of people's quality of life.
