Imen Makhlouf

President, Technical Committee 2.2 "Roads for Equity, Accessibility, and Mobility in Rural and Interurban Areas"

As president of a PIARC committee, I want to share my experience and encourage more women to aspire to leadership positions in our profession, especially in technical and engineering fields.

For me, PIARC represents much more than just a professional association. It is an essential platform for knowledge sharing, skill development, and the promotion of innovation in the transport infrastructure sector. Since joining the PIARC network in 2020, representing Tunisia in TC2.2, my active participation has allowed me to strengthen my network, acquire international expertise, and contribute to the development of the road sector.

In 2024, I was appointed president of Technical Committee 2.2: Roads for Equity, Accessibility, and Mobility in Rural and Interurban Areas. In this leadership position, I am responsible for overseeing the implementation of the strategic plan for PIARC's TC2.2 for the 2024-2027 cycle. This includes preparing deliverables, organizing seminars, and managing members to achieve the committee's goals. My role requires constant coordination and a clear vision to guide the committee members' efforts toward concrete and impactful results.

Being in this leadership position is enriching and challenging. I have the opportunity to collaborate with experts from around the world, lead collective efforts by gathering case studies, preparing deliverables, disseminating knowledge, and fostering exchanges. Supported by PIARC and the committee members, both men and women, I move forward with great enthusiasm and motivation.

However, much work remains to ensure equitable representation of women in decision-making and leadership positions. Diversity is a strength, and it is essential that women engineers are encouraged and supported in their professional journeys. Cultural barriers and gender stereotypes should not hinder their ambition. Instead, we must create environments conducive to their growth and success.

My message to all women engineers: dare to dream big, take initiative, and don't be afraid to take on leadership roles to develop your skills and broaden your horizons. Make your voice heard.
