Welcome on piarc.org!

PIARC (World Road Association), founded in 1909 and comprising 125 member governments from all over the world, is the global forum for exchange of knowledge and experience on roads, road transport policies and practices. With consultative status to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, the Association is contributing to a stable and sustainable global development of the road and transport sector.

Technical Reports Environment

This page lists technical reports of PIARC in the field of environment. These publications are classified chronologically.

  • Evaluation and Limitation of Impacts social and environmental for Road Networks and Transport Policies

One work area of the PIARC Committee 14 on "Sustainable development and Road Transport" concerns the evaluation and limitation of impacts of road networks and transport policies. The Road is life (Via Vita). This are the words contained in the logo of the World Road Association established in 1909. With this as their moto, most developed countries, and more precisely the engineers have through the years provided for the design, construction, maintenance, management and operation of roads. The primary [...]

  • Road Tunnels: Vehicle Emissions and Air Demand for Ventilation

In 1990 and 1995 PIARC published the calculation methodology and the emission factors for road tunnel ventilation design. An update of the existing PIARC methodology was necessary, as the emission standards of the vehicles were becoming more stringent and hence the vehicles cleaner. The old version described the emission situation up to the year 1995. This document has been produced by working group 2 of the PIARC Technical Committee on Road Tunnel Operations in the framework of its activities between [...]

  • CD-7802 - Pavement Recycling (Guidelines)

This document, realised by the PIARC Technical Committee on Road Pavements (C7/8), is avaible only on CD-ROM. It contains three different guidelines: cold in place recycling of pavements with cement, cold in place recycling of pavements with bitumen emulsion or foamed bitumen, and hot mix asphalt recycling in plant. After a general introduction the three techniques will be discussed. This document is not intended as a specification document or to be a state of the art report. Its [...]

  • Environment and Construction of Road Projects

One work area of the PIARC Committee on the Environment concerns the consequences of the construction of road projects. In July 1997, an inquiry was sent to all PIARC member countries. It dealt with the five major topics identified by the Working Group: soil and water protection; how to deal with contaminated land; recycling of used materials; how to take account of flora, fauna, archaeology, water and noise; work sites. This report contains the answers from twenty respondents and provides recommendations [...]

  • Road Tunnels: Emissions, Environment, Ventilation

Due to a steady tightening of emission laws for cars and changes in the risk assessment of a tunnel fire, some design data need constant updating. The Report of the PIARC Committee on Road Tunnels to the XXth World Road Congress, 1995 (20.05.B) reviews the art of tunnel ventilation over the last 15 years. In the present publication new design information and some references are given for dimensioning a longitudinal and a semi-transversal ventilation system.
