Technical Reports Environment

This page lists technical reports of PIARC in the field of environment. These publications are classified chronologically.

  • Environmental Impact of Existing Pavements

The management of negative consequences such as the deterioration of the living environment, road hazard, energy consumption, air pollution, noise, biotope modification and road congestion are today's major challenges. We often talk about the long term but work on a short-term basis without any realistically-targeted, forward-looking vision. The aim over the longer term must be to address this problem fully, with no preconceived ideas, in order to establish strict standards and consistent [...]

  • Environmental and Health Aspects Related to Working with Bituminous Mixtures

This report describes the arrangements made to limit the impact of dust and gaseous emissions in particular, both at the production and laying stage of bituminous mixtures. It also reviews the state of the art in the evaluation of health risks to workers on paver, with emphasis on the large difference between bitumen and tar with that regard. The general purpose of this report is to increase the awareness of Authorities, such as policy makers, decision makers, and the Industry of the relationship [...]

  • Pollution by Nitrogen Dioxide in Road Tunnels

This report has been prepared by the PIARC Committee on Road Tunnel Operation (C5) working group n° 2 devoted to Pollution, Ventilation and Environment. Awareness of the problem raised by nitrogen oxides in urban environment which came up following pollution phenomena (e.g. in London in 1952) has led to studies being carried out on the noxiousness of NO2, and to the measurement of existing levels in tunnels. Classically most ventilation control systems are based on CO measurements in tunnel. [...]

  • The Environment in Transport Policy

This report presents and evaluates the results of a survey on how environmental concerns influence transport policies in some PIARC member countries. Conclusions and recommendations are based on the national practices identified by the survey, on the discussions of the PIARC Technical Committee on the Environment and the 1998 Helsinki Transport Environment and Safety Week seminar "Environment in transport policies".
