    This paper summaries the results of an International Experiment to compare and harmonise methodes of measuring pavement texture and skid resistance. This work was initiated in 1988 by the PIARC Technical Committee on Surface Characteristics (Committee C1).     This issues of "Routes/Roads" intends to provide an overview of the road sector in Portugal, and the national road network in particular.In 1978, the length of the nationla road network was 18 800 km, which represented 40% of the classified network, an abnormally high percentage.
