  • Definition : Phenomenon by which water entrapped at the interface between a concrete slab and its subbase layer is ejected by the deflection of slab edges as heavy vehicles pass over. Note: in some cases fines from within the pavement structure are entrained with the ejected water, which in time may result in cavities under the slab.
