Repair of Bridges under Traffic
It has been recognized that in many countries a considerable practical experience on repair of bridges under traffic was available.
This report gathers 33 case histories of projects from practice dealing with many different aspects of bridge inspection, maintenance, repair, strengthening and renewal by considering in particular the interaction between traffic and construction activities.
Traffic considerations must be seriously taken into account when planning and executing bridge repair accompanied by adequate safety measures for users and the site personnel. Furthermore, there is an important interaction between the final quality of repair work and the traffic influence, especially with regard to traffic-induced deformations and vibrations.
When reading the various case histories and considering the difficulties which had to be overcome, it seems obvious that lessons learnt when repairing bridges under traffic should be collected, assessed and then integrated into the design and construction of new bridges.
