Submit your innovative ideas! PIARC invites proposals for Special Projects on “Motorcycle Safety” and “Road Worksite Management”

PIARC has established a Special Projects mechanism to enable it to respond to emerging issues and priorities identified by its members outside the usual four-year Technical Committee cycle.

This time, PIARC is launching two calls for proposals for the Special Projects to be completed in 2025:

  • “Motorcycle Protection Systems & Safety aspects of management of traffic for motorcycles”
  • “Management of road worksites (work zones or construction sites)”

Deadline for submission: 31 January 2025.

Proposals should be submitted electronically in English to the World Road Association General Secretariat at: gen-sec-piarc@piarc.org

Special project “Motorcycle Protection Systems & Safety aspects of management of traffic for motorcycles”

As safety of Vulnerable Road Users is a major concern for road operators worldwide, the relevant practical and pragmatic solutions for enhancing safety of motorcyclists would be paramount. In addition, findings could chart a uniform approach regarding the issue, so that further development could be harmonized by all stakeholders.

Despite the numerous solutions existing on the market, road operators still need pragmatic remedies that are applicable and have proven contra measures on road safety, especially for motorcyclists. So key purpose of the project is to identify applicable solutions for wide implementations. If such proposals are not available, there must be given specific professional (expert) direction with guidance for further development of a solution.

Special Project “Management of road worksites”

The results of the work that would be carried out as part of this special project could benefit all members of the PIARC community, regardless of their country, region or hometown, and whether they are in a low- and middle-income country or high-income country. This project is in line with Vision Zero on safety, an approach widely shared across PIARC member organizations. The need for action to optimize worksite management, minimize disruptions caused by construction activities, and safety management has never been more urgent, especially in light of the major infrastructure investments announced in both North America and Europe.

The purpose of this Special Project is to collect information and data on best practices in worksite and traffic disruption management around the world, developing an overview of international issues associated with mobility, safety and the environment in a worksite context.
