Building resilient infrastructure: Addressing climate change challenges for sustainable earthworks in West Africa

Published on 31 December 2024

PIARC Technical Committee 4.3 "Earthworks", in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Road Maintenance of Côte d’Ivoire, the Association of African Road Managers and Partners (AGEPAR), and the Côte d’Ivoire National Road Committee, invites you to an international seminar in Abidjan from April 14-16, 2025.

Building resilient infrastructure: Addressing climate change challenges for sustainable earthworks in West Africa

This event addresses the critical challenge of preserving unpaved roads and earthworks in a changing climate. These structures, vital for connecting rural communities and fostering socio-economic development, face increasing threats from extreme weather, erosion, and material instability.

During PIARC's 2022-2023 Work Cycle, Technical Committee 4.3 identified a significant gap: earth structures, often the largest highway assets, are the least prioritized in Asset Management. This seminar builds on PIARC’s findings and aims to present best practices for asset management, innovative maintenance strategies, and resilience-focused solutions to enhance the longevity of earthworks and reduce risks.

The agenda includes discussions on:

  • Managing extreme weather impacts like flooding and drought.
  • Strategies to mitigate slope failures, cracking, and road degradation.
  • Case studies showcasing sustainable and adaptive practices.

Join us for this essential exchange of knowledge with road sector specialists, climate experts, and researchers as we work together to build infrastructure that stands strong against climate change.
