Seminar on Tunnel Tech: Pioneering Resilience, Smart Technology, Low Carbon Solutions and Sustainable Development

Published on 29 January 2025

PIARC Technical Committee 4.4 «Tunnels», in collaboration with the China Merchants Chongqing Communications Technology Research & Design Institute Co., Ltd. (CMCT), is pleased to announce the international seminar on Tunnel Tech, scheduled to take place from 21 to 23 May 2025 in Chongqing, China.

Seminar on Tunnel Tech: Pioneering Resilience,
Smart Technology, Low Carbon Solutions and Sustainable Development

In the current PIARC work cycle (2024-2027), Technical Committee 4.4 tackles the cross-cutting theme of sustainability, focusing on the operation and maintenance of road tunnels. Key initiatives include reducing energy consumption and utilizing renewable energy sources for tunnel operations. Ensuring the safety of users remains a major challenge for tunnel owners and operators. Additionally, the digitalization of road tunnels and management are explored to support operators in achieving safe and efficient infrastructure operations in view of the active modes of transport (pedestrians, cyclists) which are increasing not only in the cities, but also on rural roads. The very fast developments in the area of vehicles powered by New Energy Carriers (NEC), such as electric and hydrogen vehicles will be further investigated by the Committee following the successful work already done in the 2020-2023 PIARC work cycle.

The seminar has several objectives:

  • Facilitating dialogue among international experts to exchange knowledge and proven strategies in tunnel engineering, safety, operation, and maintenance.
  • Sharing best practices tailored to the diverse needs and contexts of participating countries.
  • Proposing innovative solutions to address contemporary challenges in tunnel technology.
  • Strengthening collaboration and partnerships among stakeholders in the road tunnel sector.

With a focus on sustainability and resilience, the seminar will highlight discussions on green and low-carbon solutions for tunnel construction, operation and management. Moreover, it will inspire dialogue on hazards to road tunnels and measures that could strengthen the tunnel assets and tunnel operators.

As a result, recommendations for future standardizations in the field of tunnels will be formulated to prepare the sector for the upcoming challenges.
